  • VIDEO: American Troops Highly Active as Battle against ISIS in Iraq’s Mosul Nears

  • Kurdish Peshmerga forces retook a swath of northe Iraq late last month from Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL / IS) and days later American forces appeared in the area, the latest sign of increasing US military activity in the country. About a dozen US troops were still there this week and spent Wednesday (August 31) supervising Iraqi army engineers repairing a 45 km (28 miles) bridge southeast to help local forces cross the Great Zab river in their push towards Mosul, the militants' de facto capital in Iraq which Baghdad wants to retake this year. Loath to become mired in another conflict overseas, the White House has insisted there will be no American "boots on the ground" in Iraq, but current troop levels are approaching 5,000. That is still a fraction of the 170,000 deployed at the height of the nine-year occupation that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003, sparking an al Qaeda-backed insurgency and throwing the country into a sectarian civil war. • Forces loyal to Libya’s UN-backed Unity Govement say they have made further progress in their fight against Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL / IS) terrorist group militants in Sirte. With the help of US airstrikes, fighters claimed to have secured Residential Area Number Three over the weekend, and are now attacking the ISIS group's last remaining positions in the coastal city. Sirte has seen intense fighting in the last few months between govement forces and ISIS fighters, who gained a foothold in the country following the power struggle and security vacuum left in the wake of the downfall of Moammar Gadhafi's regime in 2011. The Libyan forces, mostly from the adjacent city of Misrata, support a United Nations-brokered govement based in Tripoli. Efforts to bring unity to the deeply divided North African country were dealt a major blow earlier this month when the Tobruk parliament voted "no confidence" in the UN-backed govement based in the capital, Tripoli.
